Testosterone Pellet Therapy: What It Is and How It Works

Testosterone Pellet Therapy: What It Is and How It Works

Starting at around age 40, men's testosterone levels decline by 1% per year. While men don't experience the same sudden hormone drop as women do during menopause, the steady decline of this essential male hormone can have effects that are just as disruptive.

At Family Urology Associates, our skilled team wants you to know that this natural change is reversible. Dr. Mohammed Haseebuddin (Dr. Haseeb) is a men's health specialist who understands how frustrating, troublesome, and inconvenient low testosterone is.

You can get your testosterone back with a little help from some tiny pellets. With a simple office-based procedure, testosterone pellet therapy can help you feel like yourself again. Here's how it works.

Understanding testosterone pellet therapy

Pellet therapy is a long-acting form of testosterone replacement. Other forms of testosterone therapy — for example, gels that you apply topically — are short-acting and designed for frequent use.

Pellets are tiny, about the size of a grain of rice. Each pellet contains testosterone that's released steadily over weeks and months.

Most men receive at least 8-10 pellets per session. However, this number can vary based on your current testosterone levels, the specific pellet type, body mass index (BMI), and other individual factors.

How the pellet insertion procedure works

During this quick, in-office procedure, Dr. Haseeb administers a local numbing agent in an area with some fat padding — typically the upper hip or buttock. He creates a very small incision and uses a special insertion tool to place the pellets into the fatty layer beneath the skin.

He closes the incision with a small adhesive strip — no stitches needed — and you can get back to your regular routine immediately.

After that, there's nothing more you need to do. The pellets are exactly where they need to be for optimal testosterone delivery. It can take up to several weeks for your testosterone levels to stabilize, at which point you'll start noticing a significant improvement in your symptoms.

Benefits of testosterone pellet therapy

Men who choose testosterone pellet therapy often experience:

Pellets can provide reliable relief. Because they gradually dissolve, they provide steady testosterone levels for around 3-6 months. That means testosterone pellets are a low-maintenance option that can fit seamlessly into your life.

Pellet therapy versus injections

At Family Urology Associates, we also offer testosterone injections, which can be effective for many men.

Injection schedules may be different from pellet insertions. Depending on the type of testosterone and the dose, injections may be as often as every week or as infrequently as every few months.

The best choice for your testosterone replacement needs depends on your lifestyle, preferences, and medical needs.

Personalized care for men’s health

Low testosterone can feel like a big burden, and it often leaves men feeling unhappy with their life as they age. At Family Urology Associates, Dr. Haseeb and our team want you to know that you don't have to feel this way forever. You have treatment options.
