I came in seeking medical attention for urinary issues while also dealing with a hand injury that made it difficult for me to care for myself. Because of my condition, I was wearing incontinence briefs.
The doctor did not perform a physical examination but told me I probably had prostatitis. The evaluation consisted of a urine test and an ultrasound. I was concerned that a diagnosis was being suggested without a more thorough examination.
What made this experience particularly upsetting was the lack of basic patient care and follow-through.
During my appointment, I told the doctor that I had experienced an accident in my incontinence brief. Because of my injured hand, I needed assistance cleaning myself and changing. The doctor asked if I had brought an extra brief. When I told her no, she said she wasn’t sure whether they had any available but promised she would ask a nurse or staff member if they had extras.
I then went for my ultrasound. Afterward, I spoke with the doctor again to discuss the results. She never brought up my request, never told me whether she had checked with anyone, and never arranged for someone to assist me.
As a result, I sat through the entire appointment in a wet incontinence brief, despite having explicitly explained my situation and asked for help.
This was incredibly embarrassing, uncomfortable, and humiliating. I was already in a vulnerable position, dealing with urinary issues and a hand injury that limited my ability to care for myself. I shouldn’t have had to repeatedly remind a medical professional that I needed basic assistance.
Even if the office didn’t have replacement briefs available, someone could have communicated that to me, offered an alternative, or at least made an effort to help.
What bothers me most isn’t simply the lack of a physical examination or the doctor’s bedside manner. It’s that I directly communicated a basic hygiene need, was told someone would check on it, and then was seemingly forgotten about.
Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, particularly when dealing with sensitive medical conditions. I left feeling embarrassed, neglected, and genuinely disappointed in the level of care I received.
No patient should have to sit in a wet incontinence brief throughout a medical appointment after asking for help and being told someone would assist.
