GreenLight™ Laser Therapy for BPH: Frequently Asked Questions

GreenLight™ Laser Therapy for BPH: Frequently Asked Questions

About 45% of men over age 45 develop benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate — and the condition becomes more common with age.

At Family Urology Associates in Frederick, Maryland, board-certified urologist Dr. Mohammed Haseebuddin (Dr. Haseeb) and our experienced team provide empathetic, patient-centered care for men with BPH-related urinary symptoms.

Our practice uses the most advanced technology to get real results. GreenLight Laser

Therapy is a standout treatment for men with BPH. This leading-edge procedure removes excess prostate tissue and relieves urinary symptoms without major surgery or downtime.

What is GreenLight Laser Therapy?

This minimally invasive outpatient procedure uses a high-powered laser to vaporize overgrown prostate tissue that affects urinary function. It restores normal urine flow and provides long-term relief from symptoms of BPH such as:

The laser targets the tissue precisely, reducing bleeding and allowing for a faster recovery compared to traditional surgery.

How does GreenLight compare to TURP for BPH?

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the prostate gland. As a major surgery, TURP is a more aggressive and invasive procedure. It's effective, but GreenLight offers an excellent alternative for men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms.

GreenLight has faster results and a quicker, less complicated recovery. TURP requires a hospital stay, but GreenLight does not.

Most importantly, GreenLight offers similar results to TURP.

Will I need to take medication after GreenLight?

Following your GreenLight Laser Therapy treatment, Dr. Haseeb prescribes medications like antibiotics and pain relievers for short-term use. At least three-quarters of men who were taking medication for urinary symptoms before GreenLight no longer need it after the procedure.

What can I expect during the procedure?

You receive anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Dr. Haseeb inserts a thin scope through the urethra and then focuses the laser to precisely remove the overgrown tissue.

How long is the recovery time?

Recovery varies, but most men return to normal activities within a few days. You may need to wear a catheter for one day after your GreenLight procedure.

How soon does GreenLight start working?

GreenLight Laser Therapy works fast: Most men have restored urine flow in only 24 hours. Full results appear within weeks.

Does GreenLight affect sexual function?

GreenLight rarely affects sexual function. One study revealed that 86% of men have the same or improved levels of sexual function after undergoing GreenLight Laser Therapy.

Are there any side effects with GreenLight?

Side effects following GreenLight Laser Therapy are generally minor and temporary. You may experience mild burning during urination, blood in the urine, or frequent urination in the first few days after treatment. These usually go away on their own. Serious complications are rare.

Does insurance cover GreenLight for BPH?

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover BPH treatments. Our team can check your insurance coverage and help you understand it.

How long do GreenLight results last?

Clinical studies show that at least 76% of men still experience relief five years after treatment — and for many, the results last even longer. Some men may need follow-up care later, but the long-term results are excellent for most patients.

Is GreenLight Laser Therapy right for me?

If you’re frustrated with medications or tired of too-frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom, GreenLight may be a solution for you. It’s effective, low-risk, and provides real relief. This procedure is a good fit for men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms who want to avoid long-term medication or for those who haven't found relief from other treatment options.
